The three largest cities is France are: Paris: 11 million inhabitants, Lyon: 1.7 million inhabitants, Marseilles: 1.6 million inhabitants as you can see in France maps. Lille, Toulouse and Bordeaux each have about 1 million inhabitants. About 10% of the French people are unemployed and roughly 15% of the population live below the poverty line.

French is the official language in France and it is also the second major language in Europe. French is one of the Romance languages. The Romance languages, which include Italian and Spanish, have their origins in the Latin language as its shown in France maps. Today, French is the second most studied language after English and spoken by more than 300 million people around the world as first or second language.

France uses the Euro as its mentioned in France maps. The easiest way to get holiday money (and often the cheapest) is to withdraw euros from an ATM (hole in the wall, cash dispenser) on arrival in France, or even from a Euro dispenser in the departure area at a major UK airport. Most French ATMs accept foreign cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, etc). (See page on Banks and paying for things in France). Note: If your bank / credit card account is not in Euros, you will pay a commission on each transaction – withdrawal or payment. Commissions are proportionally greater the smaller the transaction, so it is not advisable to use your card regularly for a lot of small transactions. You will pay less (maybe quite a bit less) by withdrawing enough cash for a day or two from an ATM, then paying in cash.
